Arghyam is an Indian public charitable foundation set up by Rohini Nilekani, one of India's leading philanthropists and advocates on environmental issues. She is the wife of Infosys Technologies co-founder Nandan Nilekani and has committed at least $37.5 million to the organisation to date. [1]. The Arghyam Trust was founded in 2001 and has worked actively in the water sector since 2005.
'Arghyam' is a Sanskrit word meaning 'offering'. It describes its mission as "Enough water, safe water... always and for all".
Arghyam seeks to support strategic and sustainable efforts in the water sector that address basic water needs for all citizens.
Arghyam was appointed to manage the India Water Portal by the National Knowledge Commission of the Government of India [2]. The portal is an open, inclusive, web-based platform for sharing knowledge, information and data on the water sector in India. It aims to create a collaborative space for those interested in water and related issues such as sanitation, water quality and wastewater management.
Project Grants
Arghyam offers project grants to innovative projects/interventions in the field of wastewater treatment & management in a rural or peri-urban area, groundwater management & novel solutions for improving sanitation.
It seeks to support strategic and sustainable efforts in the water sector that enhance equity in access to water for all citizens. Its emphasis is on sustainability - environmental, financial, social and technical - as the key desirable outcomes in all projects it supports. It works with a broad range of partners including NGOs, research institutions and government agencies. The organisation stresses attention to local participation, including capacity building, awareness and education to encourage a scaling of impact.
Current project areas include Integrated Domestic Water Management, Rainwater Harvesting, Groundwater Management and Water Quality.
