മഴവെള്ളത്തെ പ്രകൃതിദത്ത ജലസംഭരണികളിലോ, ടാങ്കുകളിലോ സംഭരിക്കുന്ന സാങ്കേതിക സമ്പ്രദായമാണ് മഴവെള്ള സംഭരണം. ഉപരിതലത്തിലൂടെ ഒഴുകിപ്പോകുന്ന മഴവെള്ളം ഭൂമിക്കടിയിലെ പാറക്കെട്ടുകളിലേക്ക് അരിച്ചുകടക്കുന്നതിനു മുമ്പായി സംഭരിക്കുകയാണ് ഇതിന്റെ ലക്ഷ്യം.. മഴവെള്ളത്തെ മേല്‍ക്കൂരയില്‍ നിന്നും സംഭരിക്കുന്ന രീതിയില്‍, മേല്‍ക്കൂരയിലൂടെ ഒലിച്ചിറങ്ങുന്ന മഴവെള്ളത്തെ വീട്ടാവശ്യങ്ങള്‍ക്കും, കുടിവെള്ളത്തിനുമായി ലോഹ തകിടുകളോ, പ്ലാസ്റ്റിക് തകിടുകളോ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് തടുത്തു നിര്‍ത്തി സംഭരണിയിലേക്ക് വഴിതിരിച്ചു വിടും. ഇതിനായി ഇലകളോ, പുല്ലോ ഉപയോഗിക്കാറില്ല. ഇത്തരത്തില്‍ സംഭരിക്കുന്ന വെള്ളം കന്നുകാലികള്‍ക്കും, തോട്ടം നനക്കാനും, ജലസേചനത്തിനും ഉപയോഗിക്കാനാകും.
ഇന്ത്യയിലെ മഴവെള്ള സംഭരണ പദ്ധതികള്‍
മഴവെള്ള സംഭരണം നിര്‍ബന്ധിത സേവനമായി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ച ആദ്യ സംസ്ഥാനം തമിഴ്‌നാടാണ്. ചെന്നൈ നഗരത്തിന്റെ വിവിധ പ്രദേശങ്ങളില്‍ 50,000 മഴവെള്ള സംഭരണ സംവിധാനങ്ങളൊരുക്കുന്നതായി ചെന്നൈ നഗര മേയര്‍ 2014 മെയ് 30-ന് അറിയിച്ചു.[1]
മഴവെള്ള സംഭരണത്തിന്റെ അവശ്യകതയെ കുറിക്കുന്ന മൂന്ന് ചോദ്യങ്ങള്‍:
എന്ത്‌: മഴവെള്ള സംഭരണത്തിലൂടെ ജല വിതരണവും, ഭക്ഷ്യോല്‍പ്പാദനവും, ഭക്ഷ്യസുരക്ഷയും മെച്ചപ്പെടും..
ആര്‌: വെള്ളത്തിനു ക്ഷാമം നേരിടുന്ന പ്രദേശങ്ങളില്‍ താമസിക്കുന്നവര്‍ക്ക് മഴവെള്ള സംഭരണം ഒരു അനുഗ്രഹമായിരിക്കും.
എങ്ങനെ: മഴവെള്ള സംഭരണം മെച്ചപ്പെട്ട ജല വിതരണത്തിനും, ഭക്ഷ്യ സുരക്ഷക്കും വഴിതെളിക്കുക വഴി വരുമാന സാധ്യതകള്‍ മെച്ചപ്പെടുത്താനും സഹായിക്കും.

RAIN is an international network with the aim to increase access to water for vulnerable sections of society in developing countries - women and children in particular - by collecting and storing rainwater.
Started in December 2003, RAIN focuses on field implementation of small-scale rainwater harvesting projects, capacity building of local organisations and knowledge exchange on rainwater harvesting on a global scale.
