家庭用水也可以采用使用物理消毒方法的集中处理办法，但该方法是可以更大规模运用的科技。将任何技术更大规模使用时，社区维修、责任及获得供应的途径都会更好，同时成本会降低。然而，如果不能实现这些，社区可能会中断对家庭用水的供应，以划分责任并允许私人使用来维护较小的系统。然而，共享的知识和资源变得更加重要(社区合作)。
