Several hillsides in the area of different soils and inclination have all seen an increase in agricultural activity, but a dropping water tableअलग अलग प्रकृति की मृदा वाले कई पहाड़ी इलाकों में कृषि संबंधी गतिविधियों में इजाफा देखने को मिला है लेकिन जल स्तर में भी गिरावट देखने को मिला है. Even though this area receives ample rainfall, ऐसा तब है जबकि इस इलाके में प्रचुर मात्रा में बारिश होती है. यहां 700 to से 1000 mm, the water table dropped considerably the past years and springs and shallow wells have dried up, possibly due to the rapid increase in agricultural activity and the decrease of forest and wetlandमिमी तक बारिश दर्ज की जाती है लेकिन फिर भी बीते वर्षों के दौरान यहां जल स्तर मेंं जमकर गिरावट आई है. झरने और उथले कुंए आदि सूख गए हैं. शायद ऐसा तेज कृषि गतिविधियों और वनोंं और नम भूमि में कमी आने की वजह से हुआ हो. स्थानीय लोगों के मुताबिक हाल के वर्षों में बारिश अनियमित हुई है. Local people have seen in recent years that rainfall has become more erratic, indicating the effects of climate changeउस पर जलवायु परिवर्तन का असर साफ नजर आ रहा है.
====Socioeconomic and cultural conditionsसामाजिक आर्थिक और सांस्कृतिक परिस्थितियां====

Grassy hills up to यह पूरा क्षेत्र समुद्र तल से 1550 meters and valleys at about मीटर तक ऊंची पहाडिय़ां और 1250 meters above sea-level make up the regionमीटर तक गहरी घाटियों से मिलकर बना है. The slopes of the hills consist of loamy and clay soils, reaching to a layer thickness of इन पहाडिय़ों की ढलानें रेतीली और मिट्टी भरी हैं. इनकी मोटाई तकरीबन 4 metersमीटर तक है. In the valleys, a wetland or marshland follows the Rwambu riverघाटियों में रवांबू नदी के निकट नम जमीन स्थित है.
====Pilot purposeप्रायोगिक उद्देश्य====
The uphill areas have been facing a dropping water table, which lead to the depletion of water sourcesऊपरी पहाड़ी इलाकों में जल स्तर में गिरावट देखने को मिल रही है. Shallow wells and springs had to be abandoned and people had to walk further down the hill to fetch water from water sources in or near the wetlandइसकी वजह से जल स्रोत खाली हो रहे हैं. This is not a desirable situation, since time spent on fetching water has increased and the ecosystem of the wetland has been decreasingउथले कुओंं और सूखते झरनों के बजाय लोगों को अब पानी की तलाश में निचले इलाकों में जाना पड़ रहा है. In the area there has been some accidental success in reviving springs by diverting and capturing runoff when a small elevated dirt road was builtयह उचित परिस्थिति नहीं है क्योंकि इसकी वजह से पानी लाने में अधिक वक्त लग रहा है और पानी वाले स्थान का पर्यावास भी खराब हो रहा है. Building upon this example, a variety of techniques to recharge the groundwater table and revive the springs will be tested in this projectकुछ इलाकों मेंं सडक़ निर्माण के दौरान पानी के बहाव को मोडऩे से यदाकदा झरने में पानी दोबारा लाने में कामयाबी मिली है. इस उदाहरण को आधार बनाकर ही इस परियोजना में भूजल रिचार्ज करने और जलधाराओं में दोबारा नई जान डालने के प्रयोग किए जाएंगे.
