Akvo founders
The following organisations founded Akvo and are actively involved with the continued development.
GreenOcean
The GreenOcean Project is a non-profit organisation started in 2002 that provides information about sustainable energy, food and water production. GreenOcean runs OTEC News, founded in 2001, the only dedicated news source focused on Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC). The people behind GreenOcean have backgrounds in Internet technology and knowledge management entrepreneurship that go back 20 years, and are perfectly poised to marry the concepts and methods behind the open source movement with water and sanitation solutions for the developing world.

IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre (IRC)
Since its foundation in 1968, the IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre has facilitated the sharing, promotion and use of knowledge so that governments, professionals and organisations can better support poor men, women and children in developing countries to obtain water and sanitation services they will use and maintain. IRC has a wide international network of NGOs that work at grassroots level.

The Movement Design Bureau
The Movement Design Bureau – The Movement Design Bureau is a design and communications think tank. The MDB team supports innovation projects, helping them research and define their market positioning, organise communications and build connections. All of our clients are somehow working to redefine the future of how we move from place to place or how our relationship with the built environment will evolve. We support corporate leaders, design teams, academic institutes and the public and private bodies tasked with technology and skills transfer.

Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP)
The Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP) is an independent body set up by the Dutch private and public sectors in the Netherlands to act as a national coordination and information centre for water-related issues abroad. The principal aims of the NWP are to harmonise the activities and initiatives of the Dutch water sector abroad and to promote Dutch expertise in water worldwide. The NWP has 135 members: 71 private sector companies, 24 public authorities, 19 knowledge institutes, 14 NGOs and 7 water supply companies. The NWP has an extensive contact network in the global water sector.

UNESCO-IHE
UNESCO Institute for Water Education (UNESCO-IHE) – Its mandate from UNESCO is to strengthen and mobilise the global educational and knowledge base for integrated water resources management; and contribute to meeting the water-related capacity building needs of the developing countries and countries in transition. The mission of the Institute is to contribute to the education and training of professionals and to build the capacity of sector organisations, knowledge centres and other institutions active in the fields of water, the environment and infrastructure, in developing countries and countries in transition.

Partners voor Water
“Partners for Water” is a programme that aims to strengthen the international position of the Dutch water sector by uniting forces (private sector, public sector, non-profit sector and knowledge institutes). The programme 'Partners for Water' is a joint initiative of six departments of the Government of the Netherlands:
- Ministry of Transport, Water Management and Public Works (lead)
- Ministry of Economic Affairs
- Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including the Directorate General for International Cooperation
- Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment
- Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Safety

FODRA
Fountain of Development Research and Action (FODRA) is an ideologically, politically and religiously independent non-governmental organisation committed to promoting and undertaking actions for sustainable development among people living in poverty. FODRA is active in Delhi, India.
