Improving the availability of water over space is one of the technical measures to increase the [[Resilient WASH systems in drought-prone areas|resilience of WASH systems]], as more points of water in an area means better access for people and livestock. Different options are:
* Local recharge, retention/storage Methods to improve the siting and re-use construction of water, which are increasingly being seen as the most important adaptations for ensuring water availability and food security physical structures in order to make them less prone to rural failure and urban populations, especially more efficiently used. Such techniques may also apply in developing countries in the face of climate changegeneral (e.g.* Various key methods for gaining more water to prevent sub-surface tanks from rainwater and groundwater sourcesleaking will also apply in areas not prone to drought) – however, some they are included insofar that they help to improve reliability of which are innovative and need further researchwater availability. * Methods on how Suitable storage methods that take into account the high rain intensity that falls for short time periods in many areas – such storage needs to limit impact on existing saline groundwater and how be able to recharge/dilute it.* Methods to increase available not only store enough volume of water to communities last through treatment many months of non-potable saline water.* Ways dry season and/or drought, but also needs to be able to improve handpump sustainability since this affects water availability conserve evaporation given the high PET rates in many areas.
