L’accès aux eaux souterraines n’étant pas toujours facile, cette section dresse donc la liste de différents types de forage possibles (classés par profondeur et par coûts). L’Afrique, par exemple, possède des eaux souterraines en quantité comparativement à d’autres continents. Cela dit, les forages mécaniques sont souvent trop chers pour la plupart de la population. Le forage manuel de puits peu profonds (jusqu’à 35 mètres de profondeur) réduit le prix d’un forage d’un facteur 4 à 10 par rapport à un forage mécanique. Cette baisse de coûts permet aux ONG et aux gouvernements de réaliser davantage de puits à eau et donne la possibilité aux villageois, aux agriculteurs, aux écoles et aux petites communautés d’avoir un puit construit de manière indépendante par le secteur privé.

Compte tenu des conséquences du changement climatique, telles que les sécheresses, certaines nappes d’eau souterraines pourraient se tarir, d’où la nécessité d’effectuer des forages plus profonds (entraînant des dépenses plus importantes). Mieux vaut éviter le aquifères perchés (les aquifères plus élevés que la surface de la nappe) étant donné que certains aquifères fourniront moins d’eau en périodes de sécheresse. La qualité de l’eau des aquifères côtiers doit être vérifiée en raison de la possible présence d’eaux salines.
