Product: Naiade

The Naiade water purification unit used in India. Note the PV panel above the unit.

The Naiade water disinfection unit is a spin-off from Nedap’s and Trojan’s know-how of large scale drinking water and industrial waste water treatment plants. The Naiade drinking water disinfection unit very effectively combines the potential offered by solar energy, UV light and battery back-up.

The Naiade has been designed to remove bacteria, protozoa, viruses and colloidal parts from raw sweet water. It operates without the use of fossil fuel or chemicals.

Product: Villagepump 700

The Village pump 700

The VILLAGEPUMP 700 yields at least 700 litres of fully purified, cool drinking water an hour or over 5.5 m3 per day, all of the qualities that meets WHO standards. Each Villagepump employs multi-stage filtering that reduce diseases by removing waterborne pathogens that can cause diarrhoea, dysentery, cholera and hepatitis. The units can operate from all forms of surface water, including ponds, lakes and streams.

Product: QuaWater Village Solution

The Village Solution provides safe drinking water to rural villages and settlements

The QuaWater Village Solution (TM) is a stand-alone system, designed together with a South African CBO to provide a permanent, multi-purpose water supply wherever surface water is available. It uses a combination of proven technologies to purify contaminated ground or surface water and supply safe drinking water. Depending on local needs other features, such as utility water for washing or water for cattle and irrigation can be added. Where needed provisions are made for the protection of the water source.

Up to 2000 people can be served with drinking and utility water and the system can be easily scaled up.

Product: AquaPak

The AquaPak uses cloth roughing filtration and solar disinfection to treat contaminated water. It is made from low cost polyethylene plastic (also used in food preparation boiling bags) with UV inhibitors added, and air-filled bubble pack sheeting (originally developed for the packing industry), the AquaPak can heat water to temperatures up to 65 degrees Celsius, a temperature that will kill waterborne pathogens using only sunlight.

Depending on the availability of sunlight throughout the day, an AquaPak can produce up to 10 litres of water per day.

Product: Rain PC

With the AquaEst Rain PC system, rainwater is purified by means of multi-stage and multi-media filtration. It’s a three-stage filtration system using 80 micron and 10 micron pre-filters along with an activated carbon filter in which the colloidal silver-ceramic balls and metallic copper are embedded. The RainPC eliminates (pathogenic) bacteria and organic and inorganic pollutants/contaminants.

Product: Filterpen Norit

The Norit water filter pen. Photo: Living Waters

The FilterPen is a handy water filter in the form of a straw which filters the water by means of X-Flow micro filtration membranes. The membranes have an average pore diameter of 0,18 micrometers and a maximum pore diameter of 0,25 micrometers. It therefore removes mainly bacteria and protozoa. Viruses are not removed because they are smaller than the pores. If there are indications that the water to be purified is contaminated with viruses or if there are doubts about this, prior treatment should be given to the water before using FilterPen.

The flow rate is 0,5 L/min at 0,1 bar. It is suitable for purification of about 100 litres of water, depending on the quality of the water to be purified and whether the instructions for maintenance and cleaning are followed.

Product:LifeStraw

LifeStraw® is a portable simple filtration device, which measures around 25 cm long and 29 mm in diameter, and filters up to 700 litres of water. LifeStraw® contains a specially developed halogenated resin that kills bacteria and viruses on contact; a special chamber further increases the exposure of micro-organisms to the halogenated resin, thereby enhancing the killing effect. Micro-filters are used to remove all particles down to 15 microns. Granular activated carbon (silver-impregnated) adsorbs residual iodine thereby improving the taste of water.

It filters up to 700 litres of water and effectively removes most of the micro organisms responsible for causing waterborne diseases.

Product:LifeStraw Family

There is a high-flow rate family unit of LifeStraw. Photo: Vestergaard Frandsen.

LifeStraw® Family is a point-of-use instant microbiological purifier that allows people to create their own homemade drinking water. The process of filtration begins when dirty water is poured into the pre-filter bucket. The 27 micron pre-filter removes coarser turbidity. At the bottom of the bucket, there is a halogen chamber that releases minimal chlorine to prevent the formation of biofilm on the membrane.

Simple gravity forces the water through a tube and into the purification cartridge, which contains millions of tiny pores called capillary membranes (ultrafiltration, pore size of 20 nanometres) that retain bacteria, viruses, parasites and fine particles. Subsequently, clean and safe water is then ready to flow from the attached blue tap. The average flow rate is 8 - 10 litres/hour. As tested at the University of Arizona, the initial flow rate is 12-19 litres/hour.
