At its simplest, '''contour trenchसमोच्च-कंटूर खत्तियाँ (ट्रेंचेज)''' construction is an extension of the practice of plowing fields at a right angle to the slopeकुछ और नहीं बल्कि खेतों की ढलान पर जुताई का सही तरीका हैं. Contour trenches are ditches dug along a hillside in such a way that they follow a contour and run perpendicular to the flow of waterये खत्तियाँ-ट्रेंचेज दरअसल पहाड़ी इलाकों में कुछ इस तरह से खोदी और बनाई जाती हैं कि के पानी के बहाव से आड़ी दिशा में होती हैं. The soil excavated from the ditch is used to form a berm (a narrow shelf) on the downhill edge of the ditchइन क्यारियों की खुदाई में जो मिट्टी निकलती है उसे निकालकर तब बची हुई मिट्टी को एकत्रित कर मेड़ का निर्माण किया जाता है. इन मेड़ों पर स्थायी रूप से पौधरोपण की जा सकती है. इस काम में स्थानीय घास का प्रयोग किया जाता है. इससे मिट्टी को स्थिरता मिलती है और किसी भी तरह के कटाव की आशंका पूरी तरह समाप्त हो जाती है. Contour trenches are not irrigation channels, rather they are used to slow down and attract runoff water, which then infiltrates into the soilइनको सिंचाई नहर का नाम नहीं दिया जा सकता है. Small scale contour trenches can also be used within field levelबल्कि इनका इस्तेमाल बहते पानी को एकत्रित करने और उसकी गति को कम करने के लिए किया जाता है. The water that infiltrates can be used as soil moisture for crops cultivated after a rainfall event, directly for pumped irrigation, or extracted from shallow wells in the areaएकत्रित होने के बाद यह पानी मिट्टी में समाहित हो जाता है. छोटे पैमाने पर ऐसी नहरों का इस्तेमाल मैदानी खेतों में भी किया जा सकता है. जो पानी मिट्टी में समाहित होता है उसकी वजह से मिट्टी में नमी आती है जो अंतत: बारिश के बाद फसल उत्पादन में मददगार साबित होती है. इसके अलावा इसका सीधा इस्तेमाल पंप के जरिए सिंचाई या उथले कुओं से पानी निकालने के काम में भी किया जा सकता है.
