Le traitement et le stockage sûr de l’eau à domicile (HWTS) apparaît comme une solution viable pour les populations, qu’elles soient nombreuses ou non, en particulier en régions rurales. Les interventions HWTS peuvent améliorer la qualité de l’eau potable et réduire les maladies diarrhéiques de façon considérable. Cela entraîne un changement immédiat dans les vies de ceux qui dépendent de cours d’eau et de lacs pollués ainsi que, parfois, de puits ou de systèmes d’approvisionnement en eau par canalisations présentant un risque.

La chloration est la méthode de désinfection de l’eau potable la plus largement utilisée. L’emploi de liquides (tels que des agents de blanchiment), de poudres (de la poudre de blanchiment pas exemple) et de pastilles adaptées est possible. L’iode peut également servir de désinfectant chimique. Il est parfois difficile de déterminer la juste quantité de chlore à utiliser car l’efficacité de la chloration dépend de la qualité de l’eau non traitée, celle-ci étant susceptible de varier selon la saison.
